The Shape Of is a unit that is in constant flux; melding and coalescing the collective visions of Theo Katsaounis, Jamie Levinson and Donny Mahlmeister. Pastoral guitarisms, motorik pulsations, playful polymetrics and bursts of warm electronic gestures weave in and out of these semi-improvised long-form pieces. TSO comes steeped from such indie rock lineage of White Rabbits, Joan of Arc, Early Day Miners, A Tundra, Dead Rider, Watchers and Collections of Colonies of Bees. Open Seki is the duo of John Biggers and Nathan Tucker. Through various synths, electronics, and lapsteel, their ascending compositions explore textures both dense and minimal, ever on the hunt for a deluxe sonic hug. Former affiliates are Hefty, Skam, Wobblyhead, Consumers Research and Development, Plustapes, String Theory, Parks & Gardens, and Thirds. Chicago’s The Father Costume features songwriter/guitarist Sam Wagster (Mute Duo, The Cairo Gang, Fruit Bats), bassist Gillian Lisée (The Cairo Gang, Califone, Fruit Bats), and Michael Hartman (TV Pow, Superposition, Next Delusion) on drums, with (Drag City recording artist) Azita Youseffi frequently joining them on saxophone. Jangly, warm tones lay the foundation for vocal harmonies and melan-comic lyrics, while aspects of Rock and Roll, 80’s dance, and atmospheric psychedelia are shuffled in service of each song.
