If you want to experience a quintessential piece of Philadelphia’s music history, you have to catch a show at the Theatre of Living Arts (universally known to locals as the TLA). Sitting right in the bustling, eclectic heart of South Street, this venue started its life as a movie house in the early 1900s before evolving into an iconic repertory theater, and finally, one of the city's most beloved general-admission rock clubs.Walking inside feels like stepping into a perfectly preserved, slightly gritty piece of rock-and-roll history. With a capacity of around 1,000, it hits that perfect sweet spot: it is large enough to pull in major national touring acts, legacy hip-hop artists, and heavy-hitting punk bands, but intimate enough that you feel completely immersed in the show. The sloped floor (a holdover from its movie theater days) means that even if you are standing in the back by the main bar, you still get fantastic, unobstructed views of the stage. The energy in the TLA is famously electric. Because the stage is relatively low and the room is essentially one giant, open floor, the connection between the crowd and the performers is intense. It is the kind of room where the floor visibly bounces when the crowd gets moving.Local Tip: Because it is located right on South Street, the pre-game and post-show options are endless. Grab a slice of legendary pizza at Lorenzo's just down the block, or duck into Jim's Steaks for a classic Philly cheesesteak before the doors open! If you want a slightly more relaxed view of the show, head straight upstairs when you get inside to snag a spot in the elevated 21+ balcony area.
