Released in autumn of 2000, Erykah Badu’s second studio album “Mama’s Gun” is considered a landmark album in both her career as well as an outstanding example of artistry for its time, and for all time. Released at the pinnacle of peak creativity of the neo-soul movement, Mama’s Gun finds Erykah exploring themes of self worth, love and social equity. Musically it also pushed boundaries, with her songwriting being perfectly paired with innovative live instrumentation and with tight-knit collaborations alongside legends like Questlove, James Poyser, J Dilla and other stalwarts of the sound and the era. Mama’s Gun redefined what an R&B album could sound like, redirected the trajectory of Badu’s career, and remains a prime example of a particular time. Joining us in a discussion about Mama’s Gun, its impact and legacy, and behind the scenes stories about the creation of this masterpiece, we’re proud to invite the legendary James Poyser to Gold Standard Album Club.
