Spirit of '76: Reggae's Greatest Year — live event on Jul 1, 2026

Ayanna Heaven and Carter Van Pelt live at Silence Please, New York on Wed, Jul 1, 7:00 PM. Free entry. Lineup, start time and tickets on Ckord.
In celebration of International Reggae Day, Good Ting presents a special listening session honoring the 50th anniversaries of some of the most influential albums in Jamaican music history. Released in 1976, records such as Rastaman Vibration by Bob Marley & The Wailers, Legalize It by Peter Tosh, Man in the Hills by Burning Spear, and Satta Massagana by The Abyssinians emerged during a pivotal moment in Jamaica's political, cultural, and musical development. These albums not only helped shape reggae's global impact, but also reflected the social realities, spiritual philosophies, and liberation movements of their time. Through guided discussion and collective listening, attendees will explore the socio-political landscape of Jamaica and the wider world in 1976 while hearing selections from these landmark recordings. Context and commentary will be provided by a panel of DJs, selectors, and cultural enthusiasts including Ayanna Heaven, Carter Van Pelt, and Jonny Go Figure. Part music appreciation, part cultural history lesson, this session invites both longtime reggae devotees and curious newcomers to engage deeply with the sounds, stories, and legacies of a transformative year in Jamaican music.
