The Smiths were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1982, known for their significant contribution to the alternative rock genre. Their sound is characterized by Johnny Marr's jangly guitar riffs and Morrissey's distinctive vocal delivery and introspective lyrics. Influenced by British pop and rock music from the 1960s, as well as punk rock's ethos, The Smiths crafted songs that often explored themes of alienation and social issues. Their work has left a lasting impact on the indie music scene, with a legacy that continues to influence contemporary artists.
