The Fatback Band is a pioneering American group known for their influential role in the development of funk and disco music. Emerging in the early 1970s, their sound is characterized by a fusion of jazz, R&B, and soul, creating rhythmic grooves with prominent bass lines and horn sections. Influenced by the likes of James Brown and Sly and the Family Stone, they are recognized for tracks that blend danceable beats with socially conscious lyrics. Their music laid groundwork for future genres, including hip-hop, with their 1979 single "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" often cited as one of the first rap records.
