Candlemass is a Swedish doom metal band formed in 1984, pioneering the melodic doom metal subgenre. Their sound combines slow, heavy riffs with clean, operatic vocals—a distinctive approach that set them apart from contemporary doom acts. The band draws influence from Black Sabbath's foundational doom sound while incorporating progressive and gothic elements. Albums like "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" (1986) established their signature blend of crushing heaviness and melodic sensibility. Candlemass has remained influential in shaping the melodic doom metal genre across multiple decades.
