Located on North Broad Street, this awe-inspiring building was originally constructed in 1908 by Oscar Hammerstein I as a world-class opera house.After decades of neglect and changing hands (it survived stints as a movie theater, a boxing arena, and a church), the building was entirely saved from ruin with a massive, $56 million top-to-bottom restoration. Reopened in 2018, it now stands as the crown jewel of Philadelphia's mid-sized concert venues. Walking into the 3,500-capacity room is jaw-dropping. The breathtaking Beaux-Arts architecture—featuring magnificent sweeping balconies, intricate gold-flecked plasterwork, and stunning crystal chandeliers—makes you feel like you have stepped back into the Gilded Age.But do not let the antique aesthetic fool you; the venue is outfitted with cutting-edge sound and lighting.
