If you want to dive into a venue that seamlessly bridges Philadelphia's storied musical past with its gritty, creative present, you have to spend an evening at Ortlieb's in Northern Liberties.Originally renowned for decades as Ortlieb's Jazzhaus (one of the most legendary, seven-night-a-week jazz clubs on the East Coast), the venue was reborn in 2012 as a vibrant, multifaceted hub for the city’s underground scene. Tucked away on North 3rd Street, the space is famously dimly lit and undeniably retro. The front room operates as a fantastic neighborhood bar where you can grab a local beer, a plate of their famously cheap (and incredibly good) tacos, or something from their gourmet hot dog menu.But the real magic is in the back "Red Room." Walking through to the performance space, you are met with black-and-white checkerboard floors, vintage red velvet stage curtains, and a working disco ball. With a hyper-intimate capacity of just about 100 people, the stage is a critical launchpad for gritty indie rock, garage punk, offbeat singer-songwriters, and late-night DJ sets, while still paying homage to its roots with jazz and funk nights. It is an unpretentious, sweaty, ridiculously fun room where you are practically standing on the stage with the artists.Local Tip: Ortlieb's isn't just about the music anymore! They host a wildly popular comedy open-mic night, and the Red Room frequently transforms into one of the city's best karaoke parties.
