If you want to experience the unapologetic, gritty, beating heart of Philadelphia's underground rock and punk scene, you need to spend a night at Kung Fu Necktie. Tucked right under the rumble of the Market-Frankford El tracks on Front and Girard in Fishtown, this place is the absolute gold standard for a true dive bar rock club.Walking into KFN (as the locals call it), you are immediately hit with the vibe: it’s dark, loud, delightfully unpretentious, and wallpapered with stickers from a thousand touring bands. The front bar is a cash-only haven for cheap citywides (a shot and a beer), local drafts, and killer pool table competition. But when you push through the doors to the back performance room, you are in for a wildly visceral live music experience. With a capacity that maxes out around 150 people, the stage is barely elevated off the floor, meaning there is zero barrier between you and the artists. It is the go-to proving ground for blistering punk, metal, hardcore, and underground indie bands, as well as the home of some of the city's sweatiest, most legendary late-night DJ sets and Emo Nights. If you want your ears ringing and your heart pounding in the best way possible, KFN is exactly where you want to be.
