If you want to experience the undisputed heartbeat of Philadelphia's indie music scene, you have to pay a visit to Johnny Brenda's. Located right at the bustling intersection of Frankford and Girard Avenues, this iconic, multi-level corner bar is widely credited with kicking off the entire cultural revitalization of the Fishtown neighborhood.Walking through the front doors, you are greeted by an incredibly inviting, old-school tavern atmosphere. The ground floor is a beloved neighborhood staple featuring a pool table, an exclusively local craft beer draft list (you will not find any macro-brews on tap here!), and a kitchen that serves up some of the best gastropub comfort food in the city—think incredible smashburgers, mushroom croquettes, and addictive fries. But the real draw is the magnificent 250-capacity music venue upstairs. Outfitted with a gorgeous, hand-built, wrap-around wooden balcony, the room feels like a classic, intimate rock club crossed with a vintage theater. It is the ultimate room to catch both rapidly rising national indie bands and the absolute best of Philadelphia’s homegrown talent. Because of the two-tiered layout, the sightlines and acoustics are phenomenal from almost anywhere in the room, guaranteeing a sweaty, high-energy, and deeply communal rock show.
