Jackie Robinson Park — music venue

Jackie Robinson Park is a slender, 13-acre historic park stretching from 145th to 155th Streets in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan. Built directly into a steep, rugged escarpment of Manhattan schist, its unique, narrow topography creates a dramatic, multi-level green space that serves as a natural border between the neighborhoods of Central Harlem and Hamilton Heights.Originally opened to the public in 1911 as Colonial Park, the space was renamed in 1978 to honor baseball legend Jackie Robinson. The renaming not only celebrated his historic milestone of breaking Major League Baseball's color barrier but also recognized his broader legacy in the civil rights movement. The park’s crown jewel is its massive, WPA-era outdoor swimming pool and recreation center. Opened in 1936 during the tenure of Parks Commissioner Robert Moses, the striking brick and stone complex serves as the undisputed heart of the park during the summer months. Alongside the pool, the park features a historic bandshell that hosts local concerts, baseball diamonds, and heavily wooded, winding paths.Today, Jackie Robinson Park remains a beloved community anchor and forms a vital part of the historic network of Harlem's cliffside parks, offering a beautiful and active retreat from the surrounding city streets.
