Herbert Von King Park is a historic and vibrant 7.8-acre green space located right in the heart of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. As one of the oldest parks in the entire borough, it serves as a central gathering place and the undisputed "green heart" of the Bed-Stuy community.Originally laid out in 1839 as Tompkins Park, its early design was actually influenced by the legendary landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux (the same minds behind Central Park and Prospect Park). In 1985, the space was rightfully renamed to honor Herbert Von King, a beloved local activist, community builder, and leader who was affectionately known as the "Mayor of Bed-Stuy" for his more than 50 years of dedicated service to the neighborhood.Today, the park is famous for its lively cultural scene, anchored by the Almira Kennedy Coursey Amphitheatre. This outdoor venue is a neighborhood staple, hosting everything from summer concerts and movie nights to community theater and festivals. Alongside the amphitheater, the park features a bustling recreation center, athletic courts, and a canopy of towering trees, keeping it a dynamic hub for both relaxation and community celebration.
