If you want to experience live music inside a beautifully preserved piece of old Hollywood history, you have to catch a show at the El Rey Theatre.Located right on the Miracle Mile on Wilshire Boulevard, this stunning venue originally opened its doors in 1936 as a first-run movie palace. The building was designed by Clifford A. Balch and stands as a pristine, registered Historic-Cultural Monument, fully completely decked out in classic Streamline Moderne Art Deco architecture. It operated as a cinema for nearly 50 years before being brilliantly converted into a live music venue in 1994.Walking inside feels incredibly glamorous. The 771-capacity, general-admission room still retains its sweeping staircases, gorgeous vintage chandeliers, and an upscale, retro aesthetic. One of the best features is that the main floor is still gently sloped from its movie-theater days, which means the sightlines are fantastic—even if you get stuck standing in the back, you will still have a clear view of the stage. The booking here is remarkably eclectic, pulling in major indie rock darlings, rising pop stars, hip-hop acts, and established legacy artists who want to play a more intimate room in LA.Local Tip: Parking around the Miracle Mile can be notoriously tough. While the venue does offer a valet service out front, you can usually find street parking in the residential neighborhoods a few blocks south of Wilshire if you are willing to walk and read the parking signs carefully. Also, if you want to escape the crowded floor, head upstairs to the VIP balcony—it has its own bar, seating, and an incredible elevated view of the chandeliers and stage.
