Located at 2174 Market Street, just steps away from San Francisco's vibrant Castro District, Cafe Du Nord is one of the city’s oldest and most historically rich live music venues. Operating out of the basement of the landmark Swedish American Hall—which was built in 1907 by Swedish immigrants following the 1906 earthquake—the venue has survived two pandemics, Prohibition, world wars, and countless ownership changes over its century-plus existence.Descending the narrow staircase into Cafe Du Nord feels like stepping back in time. The ~300-capacity room boasts a moody, speakeasy aesthetic complete with velvety Victorian interiors, a stunning copper-embellished mahogany bar, built-in banquette seating, and (allegedly) a resident ghost known as the "Lady in Red." It is fiercely intimate but never cramped, offering a comfortable, low-key alternative to the city's larger megaclubs.Musically, Cafe Du Nord has long served as a crucial launching pad for independent artists before they hit the arena circuit. Its stage has seen early performances from heavyweights like Mumford & Sons, Blink-182, My Chemical Romance, Janelle Monáe, and Neil Young. Recently revitalized and now programmed in partnership with the legendary local promoter Noise Pop, Cafe Du Nord continues its legacy as a premier destination for catching breaking indie rock, alternative, and pop acts in an incredibly unique, historic setting.
