Aya of Yop City + Animated Short Film Program β live event

Black Revivalist and Loose Frames are proud to present a night of Black femme stories in animation, featuring Marguerite Abouet and ClΓ©ment Oubrerieβs 2013 animated feature πππΆ ππ» π΄ππ ππΎππ, based on the graphic novel of the same name. The film will be preceded by a selection of shorts from Black femme, LGBTQ, and other emerging animators. Set against the colorful and spirited backdrop of the Ivory Coast in the 1970s, πππΆ ππ» π΄ππ ππΎππ follows a 19-year-old aspiring doctor named Aya and her two best friends, Adjoua and Bintou, as they navigate love, friendship, and family in the working-class neighborhood of Yopougon. Big trouble arrives when Adjoua realizes she is pregnant, and the baby's father, Moussa, is the spoiled son of one of the richest and most feared men in the country. πππΆ ππ» π΄ππ ππΎππ will be preceded by a selection of short films and works by filmmakers and animators Adebukola Bodunrin, Adrienne Fowler, Aisha Madu, Ashton Kellman-Holmes, Kat Ball, Nana-Tawi Bey, Nevaeh-Leh Lipscomb, Ryan Mesidor, Sahara Sheikh, and Uzo Ngwu. Doors open at 7:00 pm, screening begins at 7:30 pm, πππΆ ππ» π΄ππ ππΎππ, 84 mins. Shorts program, 48 mins. There will be a 15 min intermission in between πππΆ ππ» π΄ππ ππΎππ and the shorts program.
