“Have you ever had sleep paralysis?” asks band leader Barrie Cadogan, discussing the title track of Little Barrie’s latest offering. “That’s what Gravity Freeze is written about. It’s like a nickname I gave to that moment where you’ve woken up and you’re still dreaming. The first time that happened to me, I freaked because I couldn’t move but I couldn’t tell if I was awake or not. It’s a very strange feeling and you do weird things, like trying to walk through wardrobes. Some of those situations went into the lyrics of the song. There are a few elements on the album that reflect what we’ve been through in the last few years. We’ve been through a lot, some of which we’re still processing obviously.” “It was really difficult at first because you feel guilty for making music without your mate,” says Barrie, reflecting on the decision to keep the band going. “We had this unique thing, the three of us, so we didn’t know whether we could still do anything. But what else could we do other than play? Virgil will always be part of this band because when he joined he brought a sense of stability to what we were doing. He also made us more self-sufficient with his production and engineering skills. We realise that the band can never be the same without him, but it doesn’t mean we can’t do something good. It can just be different.” “Playing together felt therapeutic,” admits Barrie, “We’d known Malcolm for a long time, we hadn’t seen him for years but working with him felt great. In the end we ended up working on the new Little Barrie album in tandem with the music that we were making for Electric War. The Little Barrie material definitely picked up where we left off on the last album but there’s also new elements to what we’re doing.” Barrie admits that 2017’s Death Express – the final album recorded with Virgil released seven weeks prior to his passing – was the band’s attempt at creating “our version of the Beastie Boy’s Check Your Head or Paul’s Boutique”, reflecting the band’s ability to draw on hip hop and funk alongside their love of classic rock and blues. “We had no idea what was around the corner at that time. We wanted to make that record, draw a line in the sand and go on to the next thing,” he explains. “The songs felt good together but it was all quite wild. In some ways Death Express felt as if we were trying to stop a train that was out of control. It was cool at the time, but on this record we wanted to sit back a bit and allow things to breathe a lot more. There’s a lot more leaning back on this album.” True to the DIY process that the band had developed with Virgil, the woodshedding process for GRAVITY FREEZE began by capturing material in rehearsals rooms on their trusty Tascam Portastudio. Demos in hand, the band convened at Rat Salad Studios in Hornsey, North London, to record in the company of Rupert Lyddon (co-founder of ‘80s-inspired outfit Grand National) who had already provided what Barrie refers to as “endless technical support” on Death Express and become an invaluable sounding board during that time and beyond. “I’d been working with Rupert on some instrumental library projects and I was getting really good guitar sounds with him so it was obvious that he should be the guy to record, engineer and co-produce the new album,” explains Barrie – whose library and soundtrack work is possibly most famously illustrated by Little Barrie’s creation of the theme tune to neo-noir crime drama, Better Call Saul. Equally significant was Barrie’s contribution to BBC2 documentary, 2022’s Year Of The Dog, which profiled the work of dog charity ‘Dogs On The Streets’ and for which he composed the music, aided and abetted by Lyddon as well as drummer Tony Coote.
