Alexia Avina is an American folk musician, singer-songwriter, and guitarist from Montreal, Quebec, now based in Massachusetts. Avina's signature sound is a soft blend of ambient dream pop and electronica. Kitba, the eponymous self-titled, debut album from singer-songwriter and harpist Rebecca Kitba Bryson El-Saleh, is many things: an exquisitely produced showcase for El-Saleh’s sophisticated compositions, hauntingly beautiful vocals, and prodigious harp skills; and a love letter to the New York music community in which this music has been developed. It is also a documentation of turmoil and acceptance within the inherent difficulties of reconciling a deeply personal sense of interiority with the outside world. The record results in a mesmerizing journey through El-Saleh’s personal and musical life. It is not a collection of high-school love songs, nor is it a wishlist of capitalist striving. Rather, it is an exploration of the subtle joys and pains of adulthood. As they succinctly put it, Kitba “is about my relationship with myself.”
