Gabriela Anders — live event

Gabriela Anders

Gabriela Anders is a singer/composer/arranger originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her interest in jazz was fostered by her father, a saxophonist who arranged for Mercer Ellington's band. Through Brazilian radio, she was immersed as an adolescent in the music of Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, becoming fluent in Portuguese in the process. After coming to New York City as a teenager, Gabriela sang a weekly show at The Rainbow Room, did top jingle work, sang backgrounds for Latin Pop stars, and under the name "Beleza," released two records on JVC Japan. Her live gigs in NYC introduced her to the Latin Jazz community and formed her deep affinity for that music and tradition, all while studying contemporary composition at Lehman College. After signing with Warner Brother's Jazz, Gabriela's release “Wanting" elicited much praise from critics and audiences alike, facilitating tours of America, Europe and Japan. She recorded with Al Jarreau, Bob James and Michael Franks. She twice performed at the Montreaux Jazz Festival as the featured vocalist in George Duke’s band. Her second record for Warner, “Gabriela," featured Christian McBride, Amir Thompson and Kirk Whalum. Additional JVC and independent record releases include "Last Tango in Rio," "Cool Again," "The Ring," and "Bossa Beleza." The music ranges from funky, soulful pop-jazz, to duos with piano, to Brazilian folk songs, to energized Latin music - all strikingly invigorated by Gabriela's improvisational nature and spontaneous approach.Gabriela Anders' current projects find her singing and arranging for her Latin Jazzensemble, "Los Dukes," a 7-piece band of renown, playing the music of Duke Ellington in a wide range of iconic Latin American styles - baion, merengue, cha-cha, bolero, reggae, mambo and more. She also maintains a duo with piano and several Brazilian Jazz ensembles. One of very few jazz vocalist/arrangers on the scene, Gabriela puts her stamp of unique creativity on the music with incendiary results. Gabriela Anders has been hailed by the LA Times, Billboard and People magazine as a "highly original and creative artist."
