Pioneers of so-called “mascara moshpit,” Ekko Astral is a glitter punk group from Washington, D.C. founded by Jae Holzman and Liam Hughes. Ekko Astral’s debut album “Pink Balloons” was hailed by critics as one of the best rock albums of 2024 with reviews lauding its psychotropic snarling sound and tongue-in-cheek lamentations on 21st century living as a trans woman in America. The band went on to support internationally-renowned rock bands including IDLES, Pup, Jeff Rosenstock, Lambrini Girls and Deerhoof. In July 2026, Holzman and Hughes announced the project would be going on “indefinite hiatus” and the pair would pivot to a new collaborative project with pink balloons producer Jeremy Snyder.
