Formed in 2018, they wrote and recorded two albums of short, high-energy songs, full of chiming guitars, sweet harmonies, and introspective lyrics: 2020’s Double Life and 2021’s Be Normal. While the pandemic turned many gazes inward, theirs turned outward, both to international music and the international relations, and the apocalyptic violence necessary to maintain it. The result is Neilson Family’s third full-length release, Imperial Residue. Recorded in a dank Southeast basement, it is an SOS from the belly of the beast, set over shifting tempos and odd time, as channeled from songwriter James Neilson’s gimlet eye to his acid tongue.
