Love From The Sun celebrates it's 5th anniversary Juneteenth celebration with the founding father of house music, Lil' Louis and Love From The Sun resident JADALAREIGN. This outdoor dance party will feature DJ sets, a screening of Move Ya Body: The Birth of House, a house dance workshop with Reyna Nuñez, our annual black record fair, delicious food, portraits, local vendors and more. Juneteenth is an American holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It marks June 19, 1865, the day when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved people were free — more than two years after Emancipation Proclamation had officially declared enslaved people in Confederate states free. This milestone marks the effective end of slavery in the United States and honors the survival, culture, achievements, and resistance of Black Americans through slavery, segregation, and ongoing discrimination. LOVE FROM THE SUN AND ALFREDA'S CINEMA PRESENT MOVE YA BODY: THE BIRTH OF HOUSE Move Ya Body: The Birth of House is a 2025 documentary directed by Elegance Bratton that chronicles the origins of house music in Chicago’s Black and queer communities following the backlash against disco. The film uses archival footage, interviews with pioneers like Vince Lawrence, and cinematic recreations to tell the story of how a new sound emerged from underground clubs as a movement of resistance, joy, and unity. Alfreda’s Cinema is an acclaimed screening series and platform that reimagines cinema as a space for gathering, healing, and re-enchantment founded by Melissa Lyde in 2015. Melissa is a Brooklyn-born artist, writer, and curator committed to expanding how we experience Black cinema and experimental moving-image work. With a deep belief in the power of community and cultural memory, her practice bridges Black speculative traditions, diasporic storytelling, and underground film cultures. Lyde is known for her intuitive, immersive approach to curation—bringing warmth, intellect, and intention to every screening. Her work has taken shape across NYC’s leading cultural spaces, including BAM, Metrograph, Film Forum, and Light Industry, as well as in journals like Framework, BloodVine, and Screen Slate. Currently developing a dedicated film space in Brooklyn, Lyde continues to champion radical film histories and joyful collective experiences through a distinctly Black and visionary lens.
