Liquid Reality is a New York–based ensemble led by guitarist, composer, and sarodist Anupam Shobhakar and kanjeera virtuoso Swaminathan “Swami” Selvaganesh, a leading figure of the renowned Vinayakram lineage. Blending the nuance of Indian classical music with the openness of jazz and contemporary composition, the group creates a richly textured and deeply expressive sound world. At its core is Shobhakar’s custom double-neck guitar—featuring a fretless design inspired by the sarod—allowing for fluid melodic expression and subtle microtonal detail rarely heard on the instrument. Alongside him, Selvaganesh brings a dynamic rhythmic language rooted in South Indian classical tradition, elevating the ensemble’s interplay with remarkable precision and spontaneity. Their debut recording, Liquid Reality (AGS Recordings, 2025), moves seamlessly through Sufi-inspired poetry, intricate rhythmic cycles, and expansive harmonic landscapes.
