Andy Pitcher, Kevin Scott & Marlon Patton — live event

Andy Pitcher, Kevin Scott & Marlon Patton

Andy Pitcher is a brooklyn based improvising/composing acoustic/electronic guitarist. His reactive electronic guitar style explores a duo between the instrument in hand and the electronic processing at foot. He has played for groups like The Armed, Ray Anderson’s Big Band, & Gabriel Marin’s Social Assassins, and has lent improvised guitar sounds to producers like Joel Hamilton, Jake Alexander Miller, & Kurt Ballou. ‘Pitcher’s ears are always searching the sonic horizon for the sound of the future’ - Premier Guitar Kevin Scott - When Southern rock royalty Gov’t Mule announced they had a new bass player, I don’t think there could have been a better fit than Kevin Scott. Born in Alabama, Scott played in his father’s bluegrass band before moving to Atlanta, where he cut his teeth on the city’s rich musical scene. The mix of blues, rock, jazz, and funk allowed him to fully develop his chops and, more importantly, find his own voice on the bass. Part of finding his musical self came from working with the enigmatic “blues surrealist” Colonel Bruce Hampton. Scott initially moved to Atlanta after receiving one of Hampton’s albums by chance at a flea market and learning that’s where Hampton lived. After getting a foothold in the city, he would catch the Colonel’s attention and eventually join his band. His years in the group trained him to play with other guitar wizards in the future, including Wayne Krantz, Jimmy Herring, and John McLaughlin. All that experience and knowledge landed him in Gov’t Mule, backing up the legendary Warren Haynes. Aside from Gov’t Mule, Scott has a project with drummer Zach Danziger called Wednesday Night Titans, which creates a multi-media performance including vintage pro wrestling clips set to futuristic music. He’s also a member of Forq, and most recently, he’s become a label owner. I was lucky enough to meet Scott at Peach Fest in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after which we set up this interview to talk about Gov’t Mule, his new label, Colonel Bruce Hampton, and more. Born and raised in Georgia, Marlon Patton is a New York-based drummer and music producer/engineer. Hailing from a long line of drummers dating back to his grandfather, Phil Patton who played in the Chicago big band circuit, Marlon keeps his schedule interesting and packed full of all types of music. He is the first call for so many musicians not just because of his impeccable time, but because of the incredible musicality of what he delivers. He plays within a huge dynamic range, making him the perfect match for quiet piano jazz performances to hard- hitting rock gigs. He can play with everything from precision to reckless abandon and make it truly his own. He currently is a member of Kenosha Kid, Weisshund, Nelson Patton, Lonnie Holley, The Trey Wright Trio and The Mace Hibbard Quintet. He has toured, performed and/or recorded with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Jim White, Larkin Poe, Delta Moon, Gordi, Lera Lynn, Liv Warfield, Lonnie Holley, Houston Person, Jeff Coffin, Joel Frahm, Shahzad Ismaily, Col. Bruce Hampton, Takana Miyamoto, John Patitucci, Lew Soloff, Randy Brecker, Bobby Shew, Rufus Reid, Marcus Printup, Kevin Bales, Wycliffe Gordon, TOKU and Russel Gunn. He has recorded for labels such as Sony, Universal, Jagjaguwar, RH Music, Yep Roc, Ropeadope plus many more independent releases. His drumming has been in soundtracks on Adult Swim, ABC, and HBO.
