BROOKLYN MAQAM presents: MITRA SUMARA — live event

Featuring: Yvette Massoudi - vocals Ben Rubin - electric bass Jack Gruber - keyboards Kaveh Haghtalab - drums Joe Giordano - trombone Brooklyn Maqam is an organization dedicated to presenting Middle Eastern (in particular, Arabic) music, with the goals of expanding its audience, preserving it as an art form, and building community centered around the music. Mitra Sumara brings everyone to the dance floor with their new arrangements of beloved Middle East classics featuring songs originally sung by Ramesh, Googoosh, and Leila Forouhar. The group’s music harkens to a bygone era of freedom and progress in Iran when women were allowed to sing as soloists. Half-Iranian by birth and adopted by American parents, Yvette created Mitra Sumara as a way to connect with her roots and to share the beauty of Iranian popular song. Members of the group are from the US and Iran featuring 2x-Grammy nominated bassist Ben Rubin and jazz keyboardist Jack Gruber. Yvette was awarded the competitive NYC Women’s Fund for Media, Music, and Theater and City of New York Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment grant to record Mitra Sumara’s new album, Dream—released November 2023 and a tribute to the trailblazing Iranian women of the Golden Age of Persian Pop.
