Marta Topferova with Gabo Naas — live event

Marta Topferova hails from the Czech Republic but immigrating to the United States at a young age. She grew up singing and writing music drawing from both her Czech heritage, as well as Latin American music she encountered amidst the Hispanic community in the U.S. She lived in New York in the early part of this century, when she was a regular at Barbès and performed harpist Edmar Castañeda, bassist Pedro Giraudo, singer Lucía Pulido, violinists Jenny Scheinman and Stanislav Palúch, cellist Erik Friedlander, violist Lev “Ljova” Zhurbin, guitarist Ben Monder, cimbalom player Marcel Comendant, drummer Adam Cruz, and percussionists Neil Ochoa and Franco Pinna, to name a few. In 2012, Marta returned back to Prague, in order to launch a project called Milokraj (“beloved land)”, which draws inspiration from her own cultural background. In addition to writing in Czech for the first time, Marta also set various Czech poets to music. Milokraj’s first CD was nominated for the Anděl award (Czech Grammy) in the world music category, and features an all-star line up of Eastern-European musicians. This is her first time back in NYC in quite some time, and we are totally thrilled to welcome her back.
