Carlos Simon Curates — live event

The city of Atlanta has emerged as one of the world’s most exciting musical capitals, spanning such diverse genres as gospel, hip-hop, opera, orchestral music, and more. This week, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra taps into some of the city’s exceptional local talent--welcoming the famed choirs from Morehouse and Spelman Colleges for a program featuring Atlanta-based composers. GRAMMY™ nominated composer Carlos Simon packs a powerful social conscience into many of his works that explore contemporary life in Black America. Carlos Simon shared this statement about the concert: "When I was asked to curate a concert in partnership with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, my first thought was to include Morehouse and Spelman Colleges. It is impossible to truly quantify the impact of the Historically Black College and University (specifically Morehouse and Spelman) on the nation and the world. Particularly in music, many students (like me) come to the music department with little or no experience in technical training in music, but somehow leave the institution proficient enough to make lasting and iconic imprints on the music industry. My goal was to showcase just a sample of the talent that has been fostered by these two institutions through the performance of Spelman and Morehouse Glee Clubs, graduates Brian Major and Kearstin Piper Brown and through compositions written by alumni. I have curated this program with thinking about Black identity, social justice, anti-racism, perseverance, healing and a call to action for a better tomorrow."
