Growing up in the vibrant music scene of Philadelphia, Musiq built his reputation by beatboxing for MCs. Additionally, he built his name freestyling on the open mic circuit, and performing acapella for strangers on the streets. Moreover, his musical style is deeply inspired by the R&B and soul sounds of the 1970s. Thus, he adopted the name "Soulchild" to pay homage to his greatest influences: Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, and Marvin Gaye. Musiq Soulchild's career took off in the late 1990s.
