Gemma Laurence & Emily Jeanne Brown — live event

Gemma Laurence is a Brooklyn-based indie folk singer-songwriter from the coast of Maine. Categorizing herself as “Sapphic folk,” Laurence has been named an “up-and-comer” in the queer music scene by NPR Music and starred on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon leading up to the release of her most recent album, Lavender. Having grown up on the coast of Maine and the hills of Oxfordshire, Laurence’s time on both sides of the Atlantic influenced her unique sound: a fusion of foot-stomping Americana with a hint of English folk, with some added grit from the Brooklyn DIY scene. Taking inspiration from poets and songwriters from the past and present (Sappho, Adrienne Rich, Joni Mitchell, Mary Oliver and more), Laurence’s intricately crafted lyrics harken to another time, while her lush acoustic soundscapes beckon listeners into a dream state of lost loves and yearning reveries. The lilt of Laurence’s vocals and the poetic lyricism of her music has drawn comparisons to artists like Phoebe Bridgers, Adrianne Lenker, Tomberlin, Hand Habits, and Laura Marling. Crafting a lush soundscape of rich acoustic textures, dreamy harmonies, and found sounds, Laurence’s timeless tracks call her listeners home to the people and places left behind for new beginnings. Her debut album, Crooked Heart, was released in 2019, and her sophomore album Lavender was released on Better Company Records/The Orchard in November, 2022. Emily Jeanne Brown’s music is a conversation with herself. Her first release, which came out last month, is a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire,” and she has an original song titled “Begin” that was released earlier this month. Both are introspective explorations of the intimate relationship one has with oneself. Brown, who is originally from California, now lives Bedstuy, but her California roots are evident in her sound which sometimes recalls Laurel Canyon in the 1960s and 70s. This makes sense for someone like Brown, who cites Joni Mitchell as a primary influence.
