Stereo Mandrax (FREE w/ RSVP): Doug Shaw / Ori Barel / Bob Bellerue + Loren Connors — live event

Loren Connors has improvised and composed original guitar music for over four decades. His music embraces the underlying aesthetics of blues, Irish airs, blues-based rock and other genres while letting go of rigid forms. He names abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko as his most important influence. Bob Bellerue is a sound artist, experimental musician, sound/video curator, and A/V technician based in Ridgewood NY. Over the last 35+ years he has been involved in creating and presenting a wide range of sonic activities – experimental music, sound art, noise, junk metal percussion ensembles, soundtracks for dance/ theater/ video/ performance art, Balinese gamelan, and sound / video installations. Bob’s sound work is based in improvised free noise within multidimensional feedback systems, using amplified instruments, objects, decontextualized field recordings, and resonant spaces, processed by electronics and software written in the Supercollider audio synthesis "Sleepy" Doug Shaw is a London born songwriter, living in New York since 2003. Stringing tangled guitar patterns into hypnotics he fingers circles into webs of repetition in song. Influenced by desert blues, old calypso, raga, grime flows and rambler's laments. He plays a 100 year old parlor guitar through elements of drone, pitch warping and echo, building into an enveloping fog. Shaw was formerly a longtime member of White Magic, Gang Gang Dance and Janka Nabay, and has contributed to records of Cass McCombs, Hal Wilner, Eric Copeland, etc. He has shared stages around the globe with Lou Reed, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Animal Collective, Mdou Moctar, Dizzee Rascal, Terry Riley, Yoko Ono, Bert Jansch, Black Dice, Les Filles de Illighadad, Sonic Youth, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Michael Hurley, etc. Ori Barel is a Los Angeles-based composer and sound artist whose work spans electronic, electroacoustic, and acoustic music. His album, Bronze, Beige, Morse, was featured in The Wire, which described it as "a dizzying, hyperactive kaleidoscope of impulses" with "a keen, albeit maddeningly abstract logic." His work has also been featured on An Taobh Tuathail on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, Ireland's leading platform for ambient and experimental music, and on BBC Radio 3's Unclassified. Barel draws inspiration from algorithmic processes, improvisation, sound design, and field recordings. His chamber works have been performed by Seth Josel, Lucia Mense, Kacey Link, Eran Borovich, Anne La Berge, The Formalist Quartet, Ear Unit, and Trio Kobayashi, in venues such as MOSA series (New York), REDCAT (Los Angeles), Ballhaus (Berlin), Santander Festival (Spain), and Beyond Baroque (Los Angeles). He has performed his electronic music at ICMC, REDCAT, Center for New Music (San Francisco), Stanford University, Mills College, and throughout Germany. He holds a B.A. in music composition from UCLA, an M.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts, and a Ph.D. from UC Santa Barbara, where he worked closely with Clarence Barlow and Curtis Roads.
