8:30pm. $18 ADV / $20 DOS Set 1: Norman Long As an artist living on Chicago’s South Side, Norman works at the intersection of sound, ecology, and community, utilizing nature as both a material and conceptual foundation in his multidisciplinary practice. As a Black artist living and working on Chicago's southeast side, his work centers on local ecology and landscape—particularly the sonic ecologies of Black neighborhoods in southeast Chicago—as a space to explore and reimagine memory, identity, and futures. Norman leads soundwalks, improvising in groups and duos with modular synths; conducts field recordings; composes; and creates sound installations. His practice foregrounds nature not as a neutral backdrop but as a dynamic and politicized terrain shaped by race, history, migration, and place. His latest releases—Lines of Flight, Strinning/Long/Heinemann Trio, and his solo album Scenes of Contestation—are available on Bandcamp. Set 2: A.Martinez, Katherine Young & Friends Pianist Elena Cholakova premieres a new work - Porpidia Crustulata and Other Digressions - created by composer Katherine Young and poet/artist A.Martinez with filmmaker Masha Vlasova. Inspired by a shared curiosity about and love of lichen, Porpidia Crustulata and Other Digressions is a four-movement piece for piano, text, electronics, and video. The work aims to explore the symbiotic entanglements of these life forms through a coalescence of composed sound, text, and image. This concert represents the culmination of years of collaboration, conversations, research, and wandering. A limited edition riso-printed artist book will be available. Elena Cholakova is a pianist and educator living in Atlanta. A.Martinez is an interdisciplinary visual and social practice artist, poet, and facilitator living in Chicago. Masha Vlasova is an experimental and non-fiction filmmaker living in Atlanta.
