AURORA NEALAND & BOMA BANGO — live event

AURORA NEALAND & BOMA BANGO

New Orleans resident and polymorphic artist AURORA NEALAND is spending a nice amount of time at barbès - tonight, she brings us fellow New Orleanians BOMA BANGO Boma Bango takes the hypnotic, reverb drenched, tremolo-ed electric guitar heavy music from the 1960s in the Congo and reimagines it as if it came out of some humid outdoor bar in Southwest Louisiana. Boma Bango, by taking musical cues from Congolese luminaries as Franco Luambo & le TPOK Jazz, L'Orchestra African Fiesta with Docteur Nico and Tabu Ley Rochereau, and Le Grand Kallé et l'African Jazz, has strived to create their own kind of improvisational music based upon the sounds from this golden age. They reinvent old songs and write new ones in Louisiana French. An established bandleader, composer, performer and improviser, Aurora Nealand has become a prominent force in the New Orleans music scene. Combining the “formal education” – a music composition degree from Oberlin Conservatory and training at the Jacques Lecoq School of  Physical Theatre in Paris –  with the “informal”  experience of playing music in the streets and clubs of New Orleans and throughout the northern Hemisphere, Nealand has emerged as an innovative, sensitive and daring music creator and performer. She is most recognized for her performance on saxophones, clarinet and vocals and has been at the forefront of the revival of New Orleans Traditional Jazz, with her band The Royal Roses, but also collaborates with Bill Frisell and Tim Berne and leads the rockabilly band.  10pm to midnight $20 suggested
