Kane Mathis is the first American Oud player to perform at the Katara International Oud Festival in Doha, Qatar. His work has been recognized with an Earshot Jazz Album of the Year Award and a Chamber Music America Award. On the Kora, he holds a diploma from the Tirmamang Traditional Music School in The Gambia, and his playing has been officially recognized by the Gambian Minister of Culture and the National Center for Arts and Culture.As both performer and composer, Mathis creates original works for Kora and Oud that draw on his deep study of traditional forms and his unique artistic voice. In addition to performance, he writes about music philosophy and performance practice on his blog, offering reflections that bridge scholarship and lived artistry.Mathis began Oud study in 1998 with Mutlu Torun of Istanbul’s ITU Conservatory before continuing five years of study with Oud virtuoso Münir Nurettin Beken.
