Sulky Driver // Cape Sleep (NL) // OTHERPEACE

Renowned Dutch indie band Cape Sleep embark on their first ever tour in the US and are joined in Color Club on May 14 by none other than Chicago indie stalwarts Sulky Driver and OTHERPEACE. More about the three bands below. "The best thing I’ve heard, and been moved by, in ages." - Bob Mehr (NYT bestselling author, 'Trouble Boys: The True Story of the Replacements' and 2x Grammy winner, 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot' and 'Dead Man's Pop' liner notes writer) on the OTHERPEACE LP "Capitalism Blues." OTHERPEACE is the new-ish nom-de-chanson of Matt Clark, the Chicago-based singer-songwriter and guitar player. Clark spent his formative years in Joan of Arc, and was a founding member of Pinebender, White/Light, Love of Everything, and Ambulette; he is also a longtime musical contributor to This American Life. He has collaborated with Kim Gordon, Leroy Bach, Disappears, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe/Lichens, and Rhys Chatham's Crimson Grail, and performed at The Cartier Foundation Paris, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Lincoln Center, Oprah, and Lollapalooza. Clark has received* two Grammys. OTHERPEACE has released a full-length (Capitalism Blues, 2022), a covers EP (Lose Your Illusion I: For Los Angeles, 2023) - both recorded at Chicago's beloved Wilco Loft - and a single (Do You Feel Free?, 2023). A new OTHERPEACE EP will be released in the summer of 2025. For this show, OTHERPEACE will play as a full band, featuring Clark (vocals and guitar), with Stephen "The Kid" Howard (guitar), Doug McCombs (bass), and Quin Kirchner (drums). *His old roommate won them, and Clark signed for the delivery. RECEIVED. TWO. GRAMMYS. Cape Sleep is the new moniker of Dutch artist Kim Janssen who previously released three albums under his own name. His latest album, ‘Video Days’, from 2024 is his first as Cape Sleep. Full of shimmering synths, warm piano's and the occasional lost trumpet and boys choir, it contains slivers of 80's synth pop and 70's soft rock while having an overall sensibility that is reminiscent of 50's adult-contemporary pop: a wide-eyed look at love, friendship and the world in general. Kim's discography ranges from whispered piano ballads to maximalist orchestral synth-pop and vocal harmony-driven folk and features contributions from Eiríkur Orri Ólafsson (Sigur Rós), Chris Coady (Beach House, Future Islands), Paul Jacob Cartwright (Father John Misty), Marla Hansen (Sufjan Stevens) and the 100-piece ‘Toonkunst’ Classical Choir, to name a few. Over the years he has played hundreds of shows all over the world (including tours in the US, Japan and China) sharing the stage with Damien Jurado, Midlake, and The Tallest Man on Earth among others 'Sulky Driver' is the moniker of Donny Mahlmeister, an Oak Park based musician and designer with a focus on improvised music using guitar, lap steel and other electronic processing. His recent solo work on Trouble in Mind Records encompasses elements of minimalist soundscapes intersected with lilting melodicism. For this set, Donny will be playing pieces of solo work with the help of drummer Jason Batchko and bass player Glenn Rischke. In addition to his solo work, Donny currently collaborates with Jamie Levinson and Theo Katsaounis as The Shape Of, which had a recent release on Tone Deaf Records. He also collaborates in various improvised settings including a recent duo with synthesist Jim Schoenecker from Milwaukee. Prior to moving to Oak Park, Donny had been a long-standing member of the Chicago and Midwest rock and improvised scenes, working with A Tundra, Judson Claiborne, Early Day Miners, Collections of Colonies of Bees, Toby Summerfield, Ryan Packard, Jamie Branch, Catherine Young and Bill McKay.
