Led by Brazilian guitarist and composer Marcio Philomena, the ensemble creates a dynamic and evolving sound rooted in rhythm, harmonic sophistication, and deep musical interaction. Drawing from diverse cultural influences and the energy of the New York jazz scene, the quartet moves fluidly between tradition and modern expression. Their performances emphasize collective improvisation, subtle interplay, and a refined approach to groove and form, offering a contemporary perspective on Brazilian jazz. About Marcio Philomena: Marcio Philomena is a Brazilian guitarist whose work moves fluidly between jazz and global music traditions. Born in Porto Alegre, he began playing guitar at age 13 and quickly developed a deep connection to jazz after discovering the music of Pat Martino. This early inspiration led him to pursue formal studies at Berklee College of Music, where he studied with renowned guitarist and educator Mick Goodrick. Philomena’s musical voice is shaped by a wide range of influences, including Keith Jarrett and George Benson, while extending beyond traditional jazz boundaries. His work reflects a strong interest in bridging genres, often reinterpreting contemporary music through a jazz lens and exploring connections between improvisation, harmony, and global sounds. He gained international recognition as a semi-finalist in the Montreux Jazz Festival Electric Guitar Competition, one of the most prestigious platforms for emerging guitarists worldwide. His journey to that stage reflects persistence and dedication, having applied multiple times before earning a scholarship to Berklee. As an improviser, Philomena brings a refined harmonic approach, incorporating advanced concepts such as altered scales and tension–resolution frameworks within jazz. His playing balances technical depth with expressive clarity, always prioritizing musical connection and artistic authenticity. About Helio Alves: Helio Alves is a Brazilian pianist and composer based in New York City, widely recognized for his distinctive ability to merge the rhythmic complexity of Brazilian music with the harmonic sophistication and energy of contemporary jazz. Born in São Paulo, Alves moved to the United States in the 1980s and later graduated from Berklee College of Music, establishing himself as a key voice in the international jazz scene. Since the 1990s, he has been an in-demand collaborator, performing and recording with artists such as Joe Henderson, Yo-Yo Ma, Sadao Watanabe, Airto Moreira & Flora Purim, Paquito D’Rivera, Joyce, and Rosa Passos. His playing is marked by elegance, precision, and a unique balance between classical technique and improvisational freedom. As a bandleader, Alves has released several acclaimed recordings, including Trios, Portrait in Black & White, It’s Clear, Música, and more recently At Play, as well as Águas Brasileiras with The Brazilian Trio. His work reflects a deeply personal musical language that moves seamlessly between traditions, styles, and cultural contexts. With a sound that is both refined and exploratory, Helio Alves continues to shape a singular space within contemporary jazz, bringing together lyrical sensitivity, rhythmic depth, and a global perspective. About Kiko Freitas: Kiko Freitas is one of the most respected Brazilian drummers on the international scene, known for his exceptional technique, musicality, and deep understanding of Afro-Brazilian rhythms within a contemporary jazz context.
