WILD NOTHING, PEEL DREAM MAGAZINE — live event

WILD NOTHING, PEEL DREAM MAGAZINE

Wild Nothing is the name Jack Tatum, formerly of Jack and the Whale and Facepaint, uses for his musical endeavors, which began as shimmery, synth-washed indie pop in the summer of 2009. Starting with an early batch of demos that included a glimmering cover of 's "Cloudbusting," Tatum embarked on a career devoted to pairing his tender melodies with soft, echoing musical backing and his whispery, intimate vocals. After a couple albums and EPs spent honing this template to near perfection -- especially on 2012's Nocturne -- Tatum branched out into a more mature and well-produced version of the sound on 2016's Life of Pause and slick '80s territory on 2018's Indigo. He returned to a self-produced, if no less sophisticated sounding approach for 2023's Hold. Peel Dream Magazine is the nom-de-plume of LA songwriter Joseph Stevens. Drawing on kosmische, shoegaze, baroque pop, and retro electronica, the band emerged from New York with its 2018 debut Modern Meta Physic, which Aquarium Drunkard hailed as “one of the more true inheritors of the mantle of Stereolab to emerge in some time”. Eighteen months later, the band released their more aggressive sophomore LP Agitprop Alterna, which proved to be a breakout. Pitchfork described it as “a term paper on Bertolt Brecht and Karl Marx, written to a soundtrack of Tropicália, motorik, and library music,” and NPR as “fuzz bliss”. Stevens eventually relocated his project to the west coast, where he picked up work composing for ads and film. In 2022, Soccer Mommy invited the band to open for them on a US tour.
