Described by the NYC Jazz Record as “an intrepid composer, architect of sound and beast of the bass…”, bassist, composer, and Barbes mainstay Max Johnson is one of the most prolific music makers today. He has recorded nearly 20 albums, performed with legends like Anthony Braxton, Geri Allen, Mary Halvorson, David Grisman, Tyshawn Sorey, Henry Grimes, been commissioned by the Jerome Foundation, the Society of Composers Inc, and can be heard in Spike Lee’s Academy Award winning, “The BlacKkKlansman”. For this concert, Max Johnson presents his incredible trio with Neta Raanan on tenor saxophone and Connor Parks on drumset, exploring Johnson’s energetic, swinging, and chaotic jazz original compositions inspired by innovators Charles Mingus, Mal Waldron, and Thelonious Monk.
