Gory Dove showcases the descent into strange beauty that has continued through the last few years (even though performances of Very Good did not). Living in the woods in Canada, inviting 2 dogs into his life, discovering woodworking, living in a travel trailer, and rekindling his love of sound have all somehow worked their way into a new music with a new feeling. Hiding somewhere between swampy jug music and Kurt Cobain sits Gory Dove, while still drawing from Very Good and its influences (Leonard Cohen, Kurt Weill, The Pixies, Charles Mingus, Neil Young, etc). Never satisfied to just play music, Cronin continues to incorporate theatrical elements into his performances, generating disparate emotional qualities from the character of each song. He appears at times sneering and unlikeable, at times innocently earnest, but is always leading the listener into a living, reflective, and rhythmic realm of song.
