Big Ed's Blues Jam — live event

Monday nights in New York City: Broadway is dark, restaurants are slow, and most people are home watching TV. But not at The Red Lion Bar in Greenwich Village where, every Monday night, Big Ed Sullivan’s World-Famous Blues Jam takes place. The jam on Bleecker Street is packed with regulars, tourists, musicians and local college students all clapping, tapping their feet, and dancing. Big Ed’s Famous Blues Jam is New York City’s longest running jam, with band members who have been together for 27 years. Big Ed Sullivan is not to be confused with the 1950’s TV host; This Ed Sullivan is the guitar and slide playing front man who leads a 45-minute set not only with popular tunes by Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, Sonny Boy Williamson but also original songs by the band members. People walking on Bleeker Street pass Terra Blues and the Bitter End (both with cover charges), hear the infectious music coming from The Red Lion, and drop in. Big Ed’s World-Famous Blues Jam attracts not only some of the best musicians in town but many foreign tourists who learn about the high-energy jam via word of mouth. On any given Monday, you’ll find a melting pot of all ethnicities and ages and hear a mixture of British, Irish, French, Italian Croatian, Russian, Norwegian, Japan, Australian, and New Zealand accents.
