Jazz Saxophone Trailblazer: Rudresh Mahanthappa Hero Trio — live event on Nov 1, 2026

Rudresh Mahanthappa live at The Local Center for Arts and Culture, Saugerties on Sun, Nov 1, 5:00 PM. Tickets from $29.62. Lineup, start time and tickets on Ckord.
Hero Trio is a tribute to the heroes of alto saxophonist **Rudresh Mahanthappa** to honor legendary saxophone players who excelled in the trio format, such as Sonny Rollins, Lee Konitz and Ornette Coleman and legends Charlie Parker, Keith Jarrett, Stevie Wonder, and Johnny Cash. Drawing on music by the artists that shaped and sustained him, with a particular focus on his childhood years and material largely neglected by other jazz artists, the trio will perform interpretations with characteristically original arrangements. He will be joined by powerhouse French-born bassist **François Moutin** on double bass and drum great **Rudy Royston.** Over the course of his twenty-five-year career Rudresh Mahanthappa’s music making has constantly pushed at the artistic boundaries to encompass such diverse influences as acoustic bebop, electric fusion, and Carnatic South Indian music. Hailed by Pitchfork as “jaw-dropping… one of the finest saxophonists going,” alto saxophonist, composer and educator Rudresh Mahanthappa is widely known as one of the premier voices in jazz of the 21st century. He has over a dozen albums to his credit, including the acclaimed Bird Calls, which topped many critics’ best-of-year lists for 2015 and was hailed by PopMatters as “complex, rhythmically vital, free in spirit while still criss-crossed with mutating structures.” His most recent release, Hero Trio, was considered to be one of the best jazz albums of 2020 by critics and fans alike. Rudresh has been named alto saxophonist of the year for nine of the last eleven years running in Downbeat Magazine’s International Critics’ Polls (2011-2013, 2015-2018, 2020-1), and for five consecutive years by the Jazz Journalists’ Association (2009-2013) and again in 2016. He won alto saxophonist of the year in the 2015-2018 & 2020 JazzTimes Magazine Critics’ Polls and was named the Village Voice’s "Best Jazz Artist" in 2015. He has also received the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, among other honors, and is currently the Anthony H. P. Lee ’79 Director of Jazz at Princeton University. With an astonishing facility and power on the horn, and an inspired array of ensembles he’s led or played in since his emergence in the late ’90s-early ’00s, Mahanthappa continues to create music alive with rhythmic urgency, steeped in the lineage of jazz saxophone and responsive to traditions and practices of the wider musical world. **VIDEO** https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KvRbqeqFQQ Beer, wine, sake, food, snacks, refreshments are available If you require ADA access, please let us know 24 hours in advance by emailing: [email protected] \--- FAQ on tickets, seating, students, photography/video, parking, ADA and more can be found at TheLocalSaugerties.com
