The Yawpers — artist
The Yawpers has 2 upcoming shows, next at Cafe Wha? on Tue, Oct 6. Dates, venues and tickets on Ckord.
Formed in 2011 by frontman Nate Cook and guitarist Jesse Parmet following the dissolution of their previous band, The Yawpers take their name from a passage in Walt Whitman's poem Song of Myself ("I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world").Initially conceived as a stripped-down acoustic duo, the project quickly evolved into a high-voltage trio as they cut their teeth in Denver's rougher venues, plugged in their acoustic guitars, and added a drummer. Their sound is an aggressive, punk-infused take on roots music, often described as "cow-punk"—a potent blend of country, blues, rockabilly, and gritty rock and roll. The band developed a reputation for their frenetic, cathartic live shows, playing nearly 200 dates a year. After a standout performance at the 2015 SXSW music festival, they signed with the influential roots label Bloodshot Records. They have released a series of critically praised albums that match heavy, driving riffs with smart, deeply personal storytelling, including their debut American Man (2015), the World War I concept album Boy in a Well (2017), and the guitar-driven Human Question (2019).
