Born Abel Tesfaye in Toronto, Canada, The Weeknd is a global music icon whose atmospheric, genre-blurring sound reshaped the landscape of modern pop and alternative R&B. He first captured the industry's attention in 2011 through a veil of anonymity, uploading a critically acclaimed trilogy of mixtapes (House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence) that introduced a dark, drug-laced, and deeply vulnerable approach to R&B.Transitioning from an underground enigma to a global superstar, The Weeknd’s commercial breakthrough arrived with his 2015 album Beauty Behind the Madness, featuring the inescapable hits "Can't Feel My Face" and "The Hills." He continued his dominance with the Daft Punk-assisted Starboy (2016), blending his signature melancholia with massive, dance-floor-ready electronic production. In 2020, he released his magnum opus, After Hours, a cinematic synth-pop concept album that birthed "Blinding Lights." The track made music history, spending a record-breaking 90 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and ultimately being crowned the chart's No. 1 song of all time.Beyond his staggering commercial success—including diamond-certified records, multiple Grammy Awards, and a historic Super Bowl LV Halftime Show performance—The Weeknd is celebrated for his ambitious world-building. With eras like the purgatorial radio station of Dawn FM, he continually pairs high-art visual storytelling with pristine audio production. He stands as the founder of the XO record label and remains one of the most streamed and culturally influential artists of the 21st century.
