The Great Unwashed was a New Zealand alternative rock band formed in the early 1980s by former members of The Clean, Hamish and David Kilgour. Known for their lo-fi, jangly sound, the band blended elements of post-punk and indie pop, drawing notable influence from the DIY ethos of the Flying Nun Records scene. Their music is characterized by raw, unpolished production and melodic, guitar-driven arrangements, which helped define the Dunedin sound.
