Paul Sikivie

Born in Florida and refined in New York City, Paul Sikivie has lent his buoyant bass to some of jazz's best-loved artists, most notably serving in multi-Grammy winning vocalist, Cécile McLorin Salvant's groups for the past decade. Others who have called on him range from such eminences as Wynton Marsalis, Cole Porter fellow and pianist Aaron Diehl, to musician's musicians like Grant Stewart, Johnny O'Neal, Pasquale Grasso, and the rising star of jazz vocalists, Samara Joy. In his own current project, a chordless sextet, Sikivie explores jazz counterpoints amongst four horns, underlined by active bass and punctuated by swinging drums. Influences range from Ellington, Monk, Elmo Hope to the Baroque practices of canon and fugue. But mostly it's fun...
