Northern Soul is a music and dance movement that emerged in Northern England in the late 1960s, characterized by its appreciation for rare American soul records from the mid-1960s. The genre is heavily influenced by the Motown sound, as well as lesser-known labels like Okeh and Ric-Tic, emphasizing a fast-paced, upbeat tempo. Defining its sound are the driving beats and passionate vocals, often accompanied by energetic dance styles. Northern Soul is marked by its commitment to the discovery and celebration of obscure soul tracks, which continue to resonate with dedicated enthusiasts.
