Mike and the Mechanics is a rock band formed in 1985 by Mike Rutherford, guitarist and bassist from Genesis, alongside Paul Carrack on vocals. The group blends soft rock with pop sensibilities, characterized by polished production, melodic hooks, and introspective lyrics that often explore themes of relationships and personal reflection. Their sound draws from 1980s rock and pop conventions while maintaining the musical sophistication associated with Rutherford's Genesis background. The band achieved commercial success with hits like "The Living Years" and "All I Need Is a Miracle," establishing themselves as a staple of adult contemporary radio throughout the late 1980s and 1990s.
