Mercedes Sosa was an Argentine folk singer born in 1935, known for her powerful contralto voice and deep commitment to social justice through music. She became a central figure in the Nueva Canción Latinoamericana (Latin American New Song) movement, blending traditional folk traditions with politically conscious lyrics addressing poverty, inequality, and human rights. Her musical style drew from Argentine folk, indigenous South American music, and broader Latin American protest song traditions. Sosa's interpretations were marked by emotional intensity and a distinctive vocal timbre that made her one of the most recognizable voices in Latin American music. She remained politically active throughout her life, using her platform to advocate for social change until her death in 2009.
