Joseph Keckler is a singular American performing artist, singer, and writer who effortlessly blurs the lines between classical opera, avant-garde theater, and dark alternative comedy. Once crowned the "best downtown performance artist" in New York City by The Village Voice, Keckler is armed with an astonishing three-octave range and a classically trained bass-baritone voice. Rather than following a traditional classical path, he utilizes his immense vocal gifts to craft a genre entirely his own, creating "faux arias" and emotive ballads that explore absurd, ambiguously autobiographical, and highly contemporary subject matter.Keckler’s captivating performances—often featuring just his voice, a laptop, and video projections—turn mundane or chaotic experiences into grand tragicomic spectacles. Highlights include his critically acclaimed "Shroom Aria" (a dramatic account of a psychedelic overdose delivered as an Italian opera) and his evening-length theatrical piece Train With No Midnight. An artistic shape-shifter, Keckler's appeal spans across multiple distinct cultural scenes. He has performed at prestigious institutions like the Lincoln Center and Centre Pompidou, toured Australia in a collaborative duo with punk poet Lydia Lunch, and toured the U.S. as the national support act for the iconic indie-rock band Sleater-Kinney. In addition to his musical and theatrical output, he is an accomplished writer whose essay and story collection, Dragon at the Edge of a Flat World, was published by Turtle Point Press in 2018. A master raconteur and vocal virtuoso, Keckler stands as one of the most unpredictable and mesmerizing artists in modern performance.
