Fat Freddy's Drop is a New Zealand dub and reggae collective formed in the 1990s, known for their expansive, instrumental-heavy approach to roots music. The band blends reggae, dub, funk, and electronic elements, characterized by deep bass lines, layered production, and a focus on instrumental interplay rather than vocal-driven songwriting. Their sound draws from classic dub reggae traditions while incorporating contemporary production techniques and live instrumentation. The group is recognized for their extended, album-length compositions and their collaborative, jam-oriented creative process. They have built a dedicated following through their distinctive fusion of roots reggae aesthetics with modern studio experimentation.
