Cole Porter was an American composer and songwriter who became one of the most significant figures in musical theater and popular song during the 20th century. Working primarily from the 1920s through the 1950s, he created sophisticated jazz-influenced show tunes and standards characterized by witty, urbane lyrics and complex harmonic structures. His works, including songs like "Night and Day" and "I've Got You Under My Skin," blended elements of jazz, classical music, and popular song into a distinctive style. Porter's influence shaped the Great American Songbook and continues to be recorded by jazz and pop artists. His theatrical compositions for shows like "Anything Goes" and "Kiss Me, Kate" remain frequently performed.
